Imagination

Underneath the desk
while teacher isn't looking
I see stalagtites of ancient gum
grape and watermelon
rocks formed eons ago by people
older than my Dad
and eerie skeletons of stickers
glued to the smooth surface

The spackle on the ceiling
draws faces for me
and I watch while they mutate
into dragons
and deformed hamsters

Outside, on the playground,
the wind dances
and bumps into the trees
I hear their silent cries of annoyance
Quite fooling around!

circa 1994...probably
